Description | Oxidation-reduction reactions or simply redox reactions are chemical reactions in which electrons are transferred from one atom to another atom. The atom that loses the electron is said to be oxidized and it develops a positive charge while the atom that gains the electron is said to be reduced and develops a negative charge. We can also say that the atom that was oxidized is the reducing-agent because it donated an electron to the other atom and reduced it (made it negative). The atom that was reduced is the oxidizing agent because it took away the electron from the other atom and made it positive. |
