Description | Recall that the Law of Inertia states that any object that is not experiencing a net force will continue in its current state of motion. So how exactly would one define inertia? Inertia can be defined as the tendency or ability of an object to resist change in motion. In fact, mass is usually defined in terms of inertia. Mass is the quantity or measure of inertia in an object. The more mass found in an object, the more inertia it contains and therefore the greater its tendency to resist change. That is precisely why applying a net force on two objects of different masses will cause the lighter mass to accelerate more than the object that has a higher mass. For example, if we apply a net force on a truck that has a mass ten times that of a small car, that net force will accelerate the truck ten times less than the smaller car. Although we use mass and weight interchangeably in everyday language, a clear distinction exists between mass and weight in physics. Mass is a scalar while weight is a vector and represents the force of gravity on an object, usually close to the surface of the earth. A person has the same exact mass on the moon as he or she has on earth. However, that person's weight is different on the moon (less than on the earth). |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
