Description | This page was once part of an album of paintings and calligraphy commissioned by Jahangir (r. 1605–21), the fourth ruler of the Mughal dynasty in India. Jahangir was known for his interest in portraiture and Europeanized imagery. The subject of this portrait, often known as Rahim, was a poet famous for his verses in Urdu who served as an important minister during both Jahangir’s reign and that of his father. The figures in the margins represent Rahim’s attendants; they also reference his literary and military skills. |
