Description | The 'Hindoo College’, established in 1817, was transformed into the ‘Presidency College of Bengal' in 1855. The Hindoo College was the earliest institution of higher learning in the modern sense in Asia. The Presidency College introduced western education in the historical sense of the term and was originally a non-government college meant for the sons of the Hindu community alone. The first attempt of sorts of an Alumni organization of the College was made on January 1, 1875 when a re-union of past students took place in ‘Marakata Kunja’-Emerald Bower of the Tagores. The occasion has been made memorable by Rajnarayan Basu in his history of the Presidency College written in Bengali. At last the Presidency College got an Alumni Association that has been functioning without any interruption from its inception in 1951 till date. The first volume of Autumn Annual that was released in 1960 is accessible through the Publications section and the evolution of the Association thereafter is documented through these journals and few compilations curated by the Association’s initiatives over decades. In our presentation of the articles we have two versions for each, digital representation of the original and OCR view respectively. During Covid time the alumni association has created digital version of the volumes and we have only one version of the articles for Volumes 48 and 49. |
