Description | One of the less outlandish variations on the popular theme of Jefferson Davis's capture by Union soldiers. (See "The Chas-ed "Old Lady" of the C.S.A.," no. 1865-11.) In a wooded setting Davis, wearing a bonnet and dress and wielding a Bowie knife, tries unsuccessfully to flee from three armed Union soldiers. One soldier grabs Davis's arm, while the others point their weapons at him. A woman, possibly Davis's wife, raises her hands in alarm. The quotation at bottom, attributed to Mrs. Davis, reads: "The men had better not provoke the President as he might hurt some of 'em." |
