Description | Print shows Ivan Mazepa, naked, bound to the back of a wild horse as punishment for his affair with Countess Theresa, wife of a count who learns of the affair and settles upon this form of punishment for Mazepa. Both horse and rider, suffering from injuries, are lying on the ground, dying from exhaustion; a pack of wild horses running through a wooded area comes upon them as a raven alights in a tree nearby. Includes 16 lines of verse from the poem "Mazeppa" by Lord Byron. |
