Description | Editorial cartoon shows Vice President Nixon sitting on the shoulders of the GOP elephant which is in turn sitting on a triumphal chariot. Nixon, wearing a Superman-type suit and a smiling mask, waves in grandiose fashion. Meanwhile, a portly gentleman, labeled "GOP 60" indicates to a skeptical-looking New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller that a place has been reserved for him to pull the chariot. Rockefeller had hoped to win the Republican nomination for President in 1960, but withdrew from contention when it became clear that Nixon had a majority of the delegates. Many moderate Republicans, claiming Nixon could not win the presidency on his own, urged Rockefeller to support the ticket by running as Nixon's Vice Presidential candidate, but Rockefeller refused. |
