NDLI: Headstone in central Phoenix, Arizona's, Pioneer and Military Memorial Park, a historic but bleak and sandy cemetery near the Arizona Capitol. This was once seven separate cemeteries honoring military veterans and civic notables, the first of which was opened in 1884, 28 years before what was then Arizona Territory became the 48th U.S. state
