Description | Caption from Catalogue of Photographs and Stereopticon Slides ... Oct. 25, 1917 to Jan. 31, 1918 from the Committee on Public Information: "Airplane Construction: This man at an airplane factory is seen looking for imperfections in spruce to be used for the construction of airplanes. A small hidden sap pocket might be enough to cause the collapse of one of the wings when it is in the air. Consequently, every spar received from the mill is examined with great care, and sometimes as much as 40 per cent of the material received is rejected. Because this wood must be so choice, every wing spar accepted costs Uncle Sam from $45 to $50, or a cost of from $280 to $400 per wing." |
