NDLI: Shipbuilding (Newport News). One of the major advances in shipbuilding during the past two decades has been the substitution of welding for rivets in a number of vital sections of warcraft. Welding means much less weight and much less steel for each ship. This is one of hundreds of welders employed at Newport News, working on the man-hole coaning for a new cruiser
