Description | Print shows a race with two horses, one with the head of Ulysses Grant and the other with the head of Horatio Seymour, the presidential candidates for 1868. The Grant horse, ridden by Schulyer Colfax is in the lead while the rider of the Seymour horse, Frederick Preston Blair, is being tossed. A cabbage hangs in front of the Seymour horse to entice him to move forward while David Ross Locke, labeled "Nasby" twists its tail. Race spectators including Winfield Scott Hancock, Salmon P. Chase, George H. Pendelton and Andrew Johnson provide commentary. Horace Greeley, editor of the Tribune and James Gordon Bennett, editor of the New York Herald stand to the right. |
