Description | Print shows two men in a runaway phaeton labeled "Courier and Enquirer" pulled over a rocky road by two horses labeled "Biddle" and "Burrows." The driver is holding a broken rein and a bag labeled "52000" is at his feet. To the right three men stand in front of a hickory tree from which a US flag is flying. Two men hold guns while the other holds a placard "The Veto." In the background Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren ride in a carriage headed to Washington and the US Capitol. The cartoon was published just weeks before the 1832 election and refers to contentious banking policies that were an issue during the campaign. "Biddle" refers to Nicholas Biddle, president of the Second Bank of the United States, "Burrows" refers to wealthy merchant Silas Enoch Burrows and the driver of the phaeton resembles James Watson Webb, the publisher of the New York Courier and Examiner. |
