Salonika harbor - gateway to Balkans This is a view of the harbor at Salonika, Greece, as it appeared in 1936. Reports on May 6, attributed to German sources, said that the British and French planned to land troops at Salonika for a push into the Balkans. A new railroad line, opened May 5, leads northward into Sofia, Bulgaria. Greece has denied a pact to let the Allies use the port.
