Description | Photograph shows P.T. Barnum performers Charles Sherwood Stratton "General Tom Thumb" (1838-1883) and Mercy Lavinia Warren Bump (1841-1919), in a portrait taken late in their careers. The couple married in 1863 and continued performing until retirement in 1872. Less than ten years later, in 1881, they came out of retirement, resuming performances with Barnum's company, until Thumb died of a stroke in 1883. That following year Lavinia began working with another company where she met her second husband, Italian performer Baron Primo Magri. They married in 1885. Her subsequent career with the Baron involved less prestigious engagements in vaudeville and appearances at county fairs. She died in Middleboro, Mass., at the age of seventy-eight. |
