Description | Photograph shows Mary Ann Donaldson (1798-1881), sister of Nancy Maria Johnson (1794-1890), posed facing right in a lace lappet headpiece. Donaldson and her sister Nancy Johnson were active in the American Missionary Association and from 1862-1865 both sisters taught freed slaves at Port Royal, South Carolina as part of the "Port Royal Experiment". Donaldson lived the latter part of her years in Washington, D.C., with her sister Nancy and her family. She is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C. |
