Description | Print shows birds-eye view of two images of Münster in Westphalia, before and during the siege in August 1657. Top image includes view of the walled city with its fortifications, church steeples & spires and windmills along the Aa River. The bottom image shows view of the city under attack, smoke and flames rising from inside the city. The tracks of the volley of shells are seen as are soldiers behind blinds and behind redouts firing cannons from across the river. Prince Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen called for a siege of the city in a power struggle between the status of the city and that of the bishopric. The siege lasted from August 20 until October 23, 1657. Includes key to locations and activities identified in the print labeled A-X and numbered 1-29 in four line caption below the second image. |
