Description | Editorial cartoon shows Secretary of State Henry Kissinger dancing with a fat Slavic woman with a hammer and sickle on her back wearing hobnail boots. Prostrate figures, some in chains, labeled "Dissidents" lie beneath their feet. Kissinger advises the woman to ignore them. On March 7, 1974, Kissinger warned the Senate Finance Committee that "irrevocable damage" to detente could result if restrictions on trade with the Soviet Union were not lifted. A number of Senators opposed the move unless the Soviets reversed their policies and allowed free emigration of Jews. Marlette drew cartoons for the Charlotte Observer and other southern newspapers from 1972 until his death in 2007 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. He also drew the popular comic strip Kudzu |
