Description | Editorial cartoon shows Secretary of State Henry Kissinger as a child, in old fashioned garb, wound up in the string from a paddle ball (shown as the Earth). When President Nixon resigned in 1974, Kissinger retained his position, but his increasing efforts to deal with international trouble spots (d믭 "shuttle diplomacy") and the failure of some of his major efforts (promotion of detente with the Soviet Union and the fall of South Vietnam to the Communists) resulted in increasing criticism from both Left and Right. Marlette sees Kissinger as constrained by his many activities. Marlette drew cartoons for the Charlotte Observer and other southern newspapers from 1972 until his death in 2007 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. He also drew the popular comic strip Kudzu. |
