Description | Editorial cartoon is a parody of the cartoon strip Little Orphan Annie, based on the confusion in some oriental languages over the pronunciation of the letters L and R. The cartoon shows Daddy Warbucks (labeled "U.S. Military Aid") down on one knee, holding out his arms to a disdainful oriental-looking Annie (or Ahn-nee) in a Vietnamese conical hat. Ahn-nee says to her dog, "Imagine that, Sandy -- after paying for the devastation of our homeland, Daddy Warbucks wants to ADOPT me!" Sandy responds, "Reaping rizards!" In early 1975, North Vietnam launched a massive offensive against South Vietnam. Although the United States no longer had troops in Vietnam, President Ford felt responsible for its old ally and proposed supplying $722 million in military aid. Congress, reflecting the mood of the country, rejected the proposal, and South Vietnam was forced to surrender. Marlette drew cartoons for the Charlotte Observer and other southern newspapers from 1972 until his death in 2007 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. He also drew the popular comic strip Kudzu. |
