Description | Editorial cartoon shows an angry bride (labeled "U.S.") in a hotel bedroom (labeled "Honeymoon Hotel") angrily greeting her groom (President Ford) and his friend (Former President Nixon) who are staggering drunkenly into the room, clutching bottles of booze. On September 8, 1974, a month after Nixon's resignation, Ford announced that in the best interests of the country, he had decided to pardon his predecessor, thus avoiding a long divisive trial for Nixon over his Watergate involvement. The public was outraged, accusing Ford of making a deal with Nixon. For Ford, the Honeymoon was over. (Thirty years later, with the advantage of hindsight, most historians think Ford made the right decision.) Marlette drew cartoons for the Charlotte Observer and other southern newspapers from 1972 until his death in 2007 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. He also drew the popular comic strip Kudzu. |
