Description	Editorial cartoon shows President Nixon as an old-fashioned newspaperman seated at his typewriter answering a letter reading "Dear Sir: Some of my little friends say ... " A portrait of National Security Adviser Henry Kissenger as Santa Claus adorns the wall. The caption reads: "Yes, Virginia, there is a peace settlement." In 1897, in response to a query from an 8-year old girl about the existence of Santa Claus, newspaperman Francis Pharcellus Church wrote an editorial for the New York Sun which read in part, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist ..." The editorial subsequently became one of the most widely reproduced editorials in English. Marlette refers to this editorial in his cartoon on the negotiations of Kissinger in 1972 to end the Vietnam War. Shortly before the November presidential election, Kissinger prematurely announced that peace was imminent. When Nixon won re-election and the peace settlement was delayed, the Democrats denounced the report as election propaganda. A cease-fire was not signed until early in 1973. Marlette drew cartoons for the Charlotte Observer and other southern newspapers from 1972 until his death in 2007 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. He also drew the popular comic strip Kudzu.
