Description | Editorial cartoon shows South Vietnamese President Thieu shaking his fist at rows of crosses surmounted with U.S. helmets and proclaiming "I'm very disappointed in you." After more than eight years of involvement in the Vietnamese War, the United States negotiated a cease fire with North Vietnam in 1973 and removed its troops. In early 1975, the North Vietnamese mounted a massive offensive against the South Vietnamese. When the United States refused to supply new military aid, Thieu resigned, blaming the U.S. for not living up to its responsibilities. With the fall of Saigon, South Vietnam surrendered to North Vietnam on April 30, 1975. Marlette drew cartoons for the Charlotte Observer and other southern newspapers from 1972 until his death in 2007 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. He also drew the popular comic strip Kudzu. |
