Description | Print shows the retreating counterrevolutionary army of the Prince de Condé following its failed attempt to restore the monarchy in France. Among the caricatured cast of counterrevolutionaries forming Condé's army are vicomte de Mirabeau (Mirabeau Tonneau) wearing barrel-like garments, fallen on his face, clutching the neck of a broken bottle, a bare-breasted comtesse de La Motte, having slipped and fallen on her back, possibly alluding to a fall to her death in London, Cardinal Collier, other members of the clergy and the nobility, as well as soldiers and women. Includes a key to 23 numbered figures. |
