Description | Cartoon shows Hitler and a large Nazi officer cracking a whip leading a parade of protesting civilians, carrying a sign reading "Nuremberg Civilian Defendents." Heading the parade is a man in a white suit labeled "Dr. Schacht." Scattered on the ground are numerous skulls. Dr. Hjalmar Schacht was an economist widely credited with reforming the German finances in the 1920s and building the Nazi war economy of the 1930s. Although largely out of power during World War II and involved in plots to remove Hitler from power, he was one 24 German leaders tried for war crimes at the International Military Tribunal held in Nuremberg from November 1945 to October 1946. Schacht and others argued against being included in a group containing some of the most brutal military leaders. He was one of three acquitted. |
