Description | World War II cartoon shows a Bulgarian man, sitting on a pile of swastikas piled against a stone reading "Pro-Nazi Record." He says "Gimme!" as he snatches at a cloak (labeled "Western Thrace") worn by a Greek peasant on crutches. The Bulgarian is backed by a large hand labeled "Russia." As World War II came to an end, Bulgaria switched allegience from the Axis to the Allies and became a Soviet satellite state. Backed by Russia, it also made claims to Western Thrace, a disputed area in northeastern Greece. The cartoonist views Bulgaria's efforts, given its early support for the Axis powers, as outrageous. |
