Description | Editorial cartoon shows African-American political leader Jesse Jackson, with a bucket of black paint, painting a rainbow. Frustrated as being seen only as a black candidate, Jackson took steps in April 1986 to formally establish his Rainbow Coalition, which he billed as a Progressive force within the Democratic Party, based on the needs of a wide variety of constituents. The cartoonist suggests that an emphasis on black problems will continue to dominate his program. Kevin Kallaugher, who drew under the signature KAL, was a longtime cartoonist for both the London Economist and the Baltimore Sun. |
