Description | Four-panel comic strip showing American pilot Terry Lee in the air pursuing and shooting at an enemy Axis plane ahead of him flown by Sanjak, a female pilot spying for the Axis; her plane has been hit and is smoking. In the fourth panel, a group of enemy Japanese planes come up behind them. Terry and the Pirates was an adventure strip begun in 1934 featuring teenager Terry Lee and his older friends in China. During World War II, Terry, now an adult, joined the U.S. Army Air Force. Caniff created several notable female characters for the strip, including Sanjak, a spy, whose implied lesbianism was notable for a 1940s comic strip character. |
