Description | Eleven-panel comic strip shows Annie, her Indian companion Punjab, and her dog Sandy reporting to her long-time bald-headed protector Daddy Warbucks that they have discovered a fragment of parachute in the jungle. Daddy Warbucks and his men leave to investigate, and Daddy overpowers a man who attempts to stab him. Punjab assures the attempted assassin that they are not hampered by judges and lawyers and will have means to make him talk. Little Orphan Annie was originated by Harold Gray in 1925 and drawn by him until his death in 1968. Gray was a master story teller, and Annie's adventures dealing with crooks, thugs, and Nazis produced a loyal following, although Gray was criticized for the conservative views that permeated his stories. The strip has been continued by various cartoonists, inspiring books and most notably a musical in 1977. |
