Description | World War I cartoon shows a Russian soldier blocking a German traveler and hitting him in the nose with the butt of his rifle. The German drops his valise labeled "a Bagdad via Erzeroem." In January 1916, a Russian army took the town of Erzurum from the Turks, thus blocking German efforts to build a railway from Istanbul to Baghdad. Marshal Colmar von der Goltz, chief of the German military mission in Turkey, was especially enthusiastic about the need for the railway. Raemaekers was a Dutch cartoonist whose cartoons attacking the Central Powers infuriated the Germans. |
