Description | Fourteen-panel comic strip shows Charlie Brown, dismayed at the ringing of the lunch bell. In the following panels he laments the fact that he eats alone, that no one wants to eat with him, and that the little red-haired girl (the secret object of his heart) would probably be insulted if he even tried to talk to her. In the final panel he concludes: "Lunch hour is the loneliest hour of the day!" This episode epitomizes the nature of Charlie Brown, the center of the strip, but also the perennial loser. Schulz began drawing the strip about Charlie and his friends Linus, Lucy, and especially Snoopy, his dog, in 1950. It quickly became one of the most successful comic strips of all times, spinning off into books, plays, and television specials. Schulz decided to end it when he retired in 1999. The last strip was run on February 13, 2000, but Schulz died before he could see it during the night of February 12. |
