Description | Twelve-panel comic strip shows Brutus, a small balding man, preparing to collaborate on a musical piece with a friend. The friend has written the music, and Brutus attempts to supply the lyrics. The two begin with mutual compliments, but this soon degenerates into insults and finally physical violence. The final scene shows the friend thrown out on the street with his guitar smashed around his neck and Brutus suggesting that if he returns, he should "bring an ambulance." Johnny Gruelle was best known for his rag-doll creations: Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy, but he was also a cartoonist and an illustrator of children's books. His comic strip Brutus ran for 9 years from 1929 until his death in 1938. |
