Description | Eleven-panel comic strip shows hillbilly Snuffy Smith instructing his long-suffering wife Lo-Wizie to stack up his barrels of moonshine. As his flashy-dressing friend Barney Google remonstrates with him about overworking his wife, saying that she is looking pale, Lo-Wizie calls for help. The two men find that she has not fainted, but is trying to balance atop the huge stack of barrels. Snuffy berates her for scaring him unnecessarily. DeBeck began his strip in 1919 featuring Barney Google, a small man who frequented race tracks, prize fights and poker games. In 1934, Barney visited the mountains of North Carolina where Snuffy Smith was introduced. Snuffy gradually took over the strip, which is still published as Barney Google and Snuffy Smith, but Barney puts in only an occasional appearance. |
