Description | Editorial cartoon shows an Arab in an oasis at night, holding a gun, leaning against his camel, contemplating a sign that shows War and Peace in different directions. The spring and summer of 1958 was filled with the rising evidence of problems in the Middle East. Prime Minister Nasser of Egypt began a campaign to promote pan-Arab nationalism, insurgents overthrew the government in Iraq and killed its king, President Eisenhower sent American troops into Lebanon to protect it's government from insurgents, and the British sent troops into Jordan to protect the monarchy there. Illingworth questions how the Arab community will react. Illingworth served as cartoonist for the Daily Mail for almost thirty years. |
