Description | Three-panel comic strip shows Annie and her dog Sandy walking on a tropical island, observing the forts manned by sentries. Annie comments that Daddy Warbucks, her long-time bald-headed protector, is continually menaced by his enemies, but that he protects himself with his private army. She concludes that "'Daddy's' not 'just one man.' He's 'bout th' most powerful man on earth"! Little Orphan Annie was originated by Harold Gray in 1925 and drawn by him until his death in 1968. Gray was a master story teller, and Annie's adventures dealing with crooks, thugs, and Nazis produced a loyal following, although Gray was criticized for the conservative views that permeated his stories. The strip has been continued by various cartoonists, inspiring books and most notably a musical in 1977. |
