Description | Four-panel cartoon shows Baron Bean, a tall thin British nobleman, eternally down on his luck, wearing striped pants, tails, and a silk hat, giving his faithful retainer Grimes a check from the butcher. He explains that the butcher has bought Grimes's calf Esmeralda. Grimes suggests that it must have been for her "gentle winning ways," but is dismayed when it becomes apparent that Esmeralda is destined for a meal served with "country gravy." George Herriman is best remembered for his immortal cartoon strip Krazy Kat. Baron Bean appeared in the Hearst papers from 1916-1919. |
