Description | Print shows (on the left) an aristocrat and a clergyman, each with a hand on a low post, and a member of the Third Estate placing both of his hands on top of the others. "Pied de Bœuf" is a pun on "Œil de Bœuf" suggesting that this is how the Third Estate sees things. The caption states that they must do three things (1) to love one another more than money, (2) to do nothing to others that you would not want done to yourself, and (3) to endure whatever hardships are necessary for the good of the nation. On the right is a portrait of a patriotic accountant keeping a tally sheet of those paid, on his table are nine severed heads, he shows a balance due of 11 heads. |
