Description | World War II editorial cartoon shows a German officer, holding a map labeled "Finland," with one of his men, who is wrapped in a blanket, standing in deep snow, contemplating a sign post. One arm of the post reads "Finish. Flight via the North?" The other, "Finnish Internment?" On February 29, 1944, the Soviet Union made a peace offer to Finland, based on the previous treaty of 1941 and requiring that the German forces stationed in Northern Finland in the area of the city of Petsamo be interned. It appeared likely that Finland would accept the offer. David Low, a dominant figure in British cartooning in the first half of the 20th century, speculates on whether the Germans would try to escape or accept internment. |
