Description | Cartoon shows Darling, sitting at his drawing table, pipe in mouth, waving at the viewer. Darling had a remarkable career as cartoonist , wildlife artist, and conservationist. He drew for the Des Moines Register and Leader for most of the period from 1906 to 1949 and was syndicated by the New York Herald Tribune as well, winning two Pulitzer Prizes. He was also a commited supporter of environmental causes, serving as director of the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey, expanding the wildlife refuge system and instituting a national program of cooperative wildlife research units. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the National Wildlife Federation and designed the first stamp for the Federal Duck Stamp Program which has raised more than $475 million for the acquisition of land reserved for waterfowl habitat. |
