Description | Editorial cartoon shows Egyptian President Gamal Nasser trying to prevent a beautiful Arab girl in traditional harem dress, labeled "Syria," from escaping from his tent (labeled "U.A.R."). In 1958, in the interest of promoting Arab unity, Syria and Egypt merged to form the United Arab Republic. Syria withdrew in 1961, fearing that Egypt was attempting to dominate the union. Edmund Valtman was born in Estonia and experienced both the Soviet and German occupations before emigrating to the United States in 1949, where he became the editorial cartoonist for the Hartford Times. |
