Description | Cartoon shows an Adam and Eve scene in which a balding elderly man (labeled "Pentagon") offers a lemon (labeled "ABM System") to a voluptuous young woman (labeled "U.S."). Meanwhile, an apple labeled "Domestic Needs" hangs from a low branch. In 1969, the Nixon Administration proposed the building of an Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) system designed to protect American missile launch sites. Critics insisted that domestic needs including an effort to balance the budget were more important. Darcy cartooned for Newsday and won a Pulitzer Prize in 1977. |
