Description | Cartoon shows President Jimmy Carter, seated despondently at his desk, telling Jody Powell, his press secretary, that he doesn't have the strength to face another press conference. In July 1979, Carter's approval ratings at the polls had sunk to new lows -- according to some, lower than President Nixon's at the time he resigned. The President cancelled a major energy address at the last minute and shortly thereafter shook up his administration by firing four members of his cabinet. On July 27, he held his first press conference in two months and announced that in the future, instead of talking to the press in Washington, he would hold regional conferences around the country. Peterson cartooned for the Vancouver Sun. |
