Description | Cartoon shows a group of middle-aged socialites, rather scantily dressed (perhaps for a costume party), proposing to go to a local theater to hiss President Roosevelt. Peter Arno's cartoons depicting New York cafe society were a staple in The New Yorker for more than forty years. Although Roosevelt was immensely popular with the American common people during the Depression, he was cordially hated by many members of the conservative upper classes. The Trans-Lux was a popular New York theater that specialized in newsreels, which regularly featured the President. |
