Description | Three-panel comic strip shows a man bent over, painting a fence. Skippy, a small boy wearing a long coat, floppy tie and plaid hat, eyes the inviting prospect and laments the fact that he has left his slingshot at home. The strip, drawn from 1913 until 1945, chronicled the everyday adventures of a small boy who played mischievous tricks, skipped school when possible, and debated the illogic of life. The strip was immensely popular for many years, but in the 1930s, Crosby became preoccupied with political concerns, inveighing against President Roosevelt, Al Capone, J. Edgar Hoover, press censorship, and communism, among other things. He spent his last years in a mental hospital. |
