Description | World War II cartoon shows a large hand (labeled "Wainwright") rubbing the face of a Japanese man into the ground (labeled "Bataan"). General Jonathan Wainwright was commander of the American forces in the Philippines that, in 1942, after a courageous defense, had been forced to surrender at Bataan and Corregidor. In August 1944, reports began to circulate, speculating that General MacArthur was about to begin to retake the Philippines. The actual invasion did not begin until October 1944, and Wainwright was not liberated from a Japanese prisoner of war camp until the Japanese surrender at the end of the war. Although Wainwright did not participate in the liberation of Bataan, Goldberg is prescient in suggesting that for him it will be a moral victory. |
