Description | World War II cartoon shows German leader Rudolf Hess in a prisoner of war uniform (labeled "No. 3 Hess") standing under a giant question mark. His heavy black brows appear to mask his eyes. Hess was a close associate of Hitler, standing second in line to the Chancellorship. On May 10, 1941, he flew a small plane across the channel and parachuted into Scotland. He claimed that he had come to negotiate peace but was repudiated by Hitler. Hess spent the war a prisoner in England. After the war, he was convicted at the Nuremburg Trials to life imprisonment and died, the only prisoner in Berlin's Spandau Prison in 1987. The mystery of his flight to Scotland has never been fully explained. |
