Description | Photograph shows (left to right): the child Dorothoy Pray and her Russian nurse, Anastasia Arten'eva; two Japanese amahs, O Yasa San and O Kiku San; Frederick Pray; and two Chinese servants, identified as the cook and Dou Kee. The Prays and Sarah Smith rented this summer house from 1907 to 1922 and called it Seyuza, a Chinese name signifying the peaceful home to the north. (Source: B. Ingemanson, 2002) Written on back of photo are the names of the people and the text: "This is our little datcha [sic]. Isn't it nice? 1908-1921. Sixteen miles from Vladivostok across the Amur Bay--train to Okeanskaya [sic], boat across the bay. On the Novogeorgievsk Estate belonging to Karl and Agatha Goldenstedt, 2700 acres, 300 cattle." |
