Description | Caricature of a hirsute Fidel Castro in his customary military dress on a stage with microphones, exhorting the masses. Castro gained an early audience for his opinions on the Cuban government after graduating from the University of Havana in 1950. He quickly gained power and support by speaking to fellow Cubans about his dissatisfaction with the political dictatorship in Cuba and was a key leader in organizing the rebel force known as "The 26th of July" revolutionary movement. Through this following, composed largely of city dwellers and exiles, Castro gained sufficient support to overthrow the Cuban government in 1959. He was proclaimed premier in 1959 and from that point on worked to transform Cuba into the first communist state in the western hemisphere. He rules the nation to this day. |
