| Description | Photographs include images used in Congressional Quarterly publications showing a variety of topics with the largest portion focusing on energy, the environment, immigration, labor and industry. Environmental topics include animals such as wild horses, dams, irrigation projects, soil conservation, water treatment plants, national parks and other recreational areas, and volcanoes. Energy subjects show pictures of lines at gas stations due to shortages, nuclear waste storage facilities in Yucca Mountain, Nevada and Oak Ridge, Tennessee; offshore drilling platforms, oil refineries in Prudhoe Bay Oilfield, Alaska; seabed mining including images of the Glomar Explorer ship, solar panels on buildings, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, oil pipelines and tankers, synfuel facilities at Rifle, Colorado and Tar Sands, Alberta, Canada; uranium mills at Grants, New Mexico and Wyoming; weatherization of homes, and wind turbines in Hawaii. Immigration images depict immigrants from Laos, Vietnam, Mexico, the Soviet Union and other locations; naturalization ceremonies and activities of border patrol agents. Photographs relating to labor and industry show robots, car assembly line workers, textile factories, Job Corps trainees, CETA (Comprehensive Employment and Training Act) workers doing landscaping work, office workers, cleaning crews and labor unions. Other subjects such as Science and Technology include U.S. Postal Service employees sorting and delivering mail, computers in use in offices, personal computers, and the UNIVAC 1100/80 and VAX 11/782 computer systems. Media--Politics images include screenshots of the television show 60 Minutes, a Republican National Committee program called "Women who win" and photojournalists covering congressional hearings. Health related images show medical personnel attending to patients and working in laboratories. Bureau of Reclamation images depict dams, canals, irrigation systems, reservoirs in California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. Collection also includes numerous image of seals (print, stickers and photographs), mostly of federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Department of Commerce as well as state seals and others. |
