Description | Mainly studio portrait photographs, many are cabinet cards, group portraits, modern photographs of portrait paintings after such artists as John Singleton Copley and Charles Willson Peale, as well as some silhouettes, notably of George and Martha Washington, and Theodore Roosevelt. Includes the 1873 Princeton baseball team, the Dauntless baseball team, a photo-montage of cartes de visite of the Bachelor Baseball Club, as well as a photograph of the montage, the "Class of 1888 & 1889. Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts", a color reproduction of the ca. 1797 Gilbert Stuart painting of Elizabeth Beale Bordley (1777-1863), an "Ivory Photograph" portrait of a young woman, copyright Oct. 3 1872 by J.H. Pope, 91 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore, Md., includes letter to the Copyright Office, copyright stamp, date and number. Also, a full-length portrait of "Madam Rachel", a photolithographic portrait of Jas. A. Cutting of Cutting & Turner, 10 Tremont Row, Boston (1857-1859), printed by Cutting & Bradford's Photolithography, and a portrait of "L.H. Bradford, lithographer, 221 Washington St., Boston" also printed by J.A. Cutting & L.H. Bradford, two portraits of women each labeled as a "specimen of photograph printed from stone" dated 1858 and 1859, possibly by Cutting & Turner or Cutting & Bradford. There are several proof portrait photographs used for ordering additional copies, one in particular is a three-quarter length portrait of a young woman, "Miss Hardee", the daughter of the Commandant of Cadets at West Point between 1856 and 1861, Confederate general William Joseph Hardee. Includes portraits in natural settings, as well as group portraits of students in a classroom and textile workers inside a textile factory. |
