Description | Photographs of Cairo, Illinois believed to have been taken in 1861 soon after the start of the Civil War when Union troops established military installations in the city. Views are from an elevated vantage point. Six numbered prints, when placed side-by-side, form a panoramic-like sweep of Cairo, showing the levee, Ohio River, Fort Prentiss, the railroad depot, and the business section. Four additional views show troops at Camp Smith and the guns at "Fort Prentiss" (renamed Fort Defiance in the Summer or Fall of 1861). |
